The Thursday Writers

abide

Posted | 2 comments

The Thursday writers meet weekly in a public library. We collect twenty minute prompts, mostly one sentence long, draw a prompt at random, then write furiously and read our work to the group. Sharing writing information such as workshops, books, and readings we've been to have kept us current on what's happening in our neighbourhood. Our focus as writers has grown and now this new venture with the Island Woman Magazine is very exciting. We plan on a once monthly submission, rotating writers throughout the year. We are having lots of writing fun!

 In the moments between

when we cannot feel the

warmth of your hand in mine,
the brush of skin on skin and

we are open to the world alone

unsafe exposed  I know

that somewhere you are thinking

of me

knowing that I am

treasuring the memory

of you, and we

abide in our love as in a

warm home in winter.

The Years Have Stolen Everything.

There was a time,

wasn’t there?

when your halting

tender breath

searching found

and touched

my diffident skin

caught and held me

silent held me silent

astonished trembling

with desire like sudden pain.

Do you remember?

We laughed, didn’t we?

We wept, didn’t we?

One Night Stand – Chiconcuac.

Argentina

walks right over,

knowing a soft touch

when she sees one.

Lion-faced,

she wheedles, cajoles,

moans

a plaintive tabby song,

lays claim to

the Welcome mat.

Her buddy Kiki

knowing the drill

waits around the corner,

lets sultry Argentina

break the ice

Then tumbles in,

cartwheeling clown

dirty hungry terrier

flea-bitten beggar

shameless con.

And both are fed

and both are stroked

and both are left

to polish their act

and take the stage tomorrow

for tomorrow’s crowd.

by Sandra Leigh.

The Miles Scream By

The miles scream by on

Interstate Highway 35

dots and dashes define

the conveyor belt

to which we cling

like Lucy in the candy factory

and all around are propositions

winking from billboards and

digital signs and the windowless

walls of hot pink buildings

saying come on buy this religion buy

that pair of shoes

buy something else you didn’t even

know you needed and all my

energy is wrapped up in

staying alive all the way

to Austin.

by Sandra Leigh.
