Tuesday, February 20th Luncheon  ~ 11:45 am – 1:30 pm, Comfort Inn & Suites Convention Centre ~ 3020 Blanshard Street

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights: “A STORY AND A BUILDING” Speaker: Brian Head, Volunteer Ambassador, CMHR

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first national museum to be built in nearly half a century, the first to be located outside the capital region, and the first dedicated solely to human rights.  The architecture of the building is stunning, the stories portrayed within the museum are compelling, and the story behind the museum is fascinating. Why is it located in Winnipeg? How did Israel (Izzy) Asper’s vision for a museum dedicated to human rights come to life?

Retired educator Brian Head has been a member of the Friends of CMHR for more than a decade.  He has been a Volunteer Ambassador for the museum since it opened in September 2014. His  presentation will take luncheon guests behind the scenes at the CMHR and provide a fascinating
look at the “story behind the story” of Canada’s newest national treasure.

The luncheon is open to the public. Reservations are required by February 16.

Reservations: Phone (250) 370-1837 or reserve on Eventbrite via the Canadian Club of Victoria web site:  https://thecanadianclubofvictoria.com

Tickets: Members $28, Guests $33

Is Co-housing for You?

A two-day experiential workshop with facilitator Dr Margaret Critchlow, Anthropologist, Educator, Co-housing Consultant, and Founding Member of Harbourside Co-housing.   A co-housing community is a neighbourhood designed and developed by its members to combine the independent autonomy of private homes with the social benefits of a congenial and energetic community.    Workshop participants explore how to access the creative power of community to build a better world and improve quality of life. Margaret draws on examples from other cultures, old-fashioned neighbourhoods, and contemporary co-housing communities. You will learn together how to work through differences collaboratively, make decisions well, and find creative solutions that enable the best in all of us. Recommended for anyone interested in the new Ravens Crossing Co-housing initiative on the Saanich Peninsula and other co-housing projects, such as West Wind Harbour Co-housing in Sooke.  A free Information session about the Ravens Crossing Co-housing initiative follows the workshop on Saturday (4.30 pm to 6.00pm).  Info & registration on Eventbrite or visit our website http://www.ravenscrossing.ca/

Sat/Sun May 5th and 6th, 9:30-4:30 both days at the Sidney Library, 10091 Resthaven Drive, Sidney, BC
Cost: $125/single, $175/couple

Co-housing on the Saanich Peninsula – Free Information Session

Come meet our members and find out about our co-housing initiative on the Saanich Peninsula. Vancouver Island is a hub of co-housing activity with three completed communities and two new projects underway. A co-housing community is a neighbourhood designed and developed by its members to combine the independent autonomy of private homes with the social benefits of a congenial and energetic community. What is our vision? We are a diverse group of independent households, enthusiastically looking forward to developing our own multi-generational co-housing community in Brentwood Bay, Saanichton or Sidney, within a ten-minute walk of the amenities and green spaces we need to live a more sustainable lifestyle. We envision a community primarily of compact, creatively-designed bright apartments with extensive common facilities to augment our private dwellings and support us to have more connection with our neighbours. Using Co-housing Development Consulting, the same experts who successfully guided the development of Harbourside Co-housing in Sooke and six other co-housing communities in western Canada, we hope to be ready to move into our community of 25-30 new homes by 2020. We are actively building our membership and welcome introverts and extroverts in all ages and stages of life who value privacy and connection within a simpler, healthier, and more energy-efficient environment. This event is happening in conjunction with Margaret Critchlow’s 2-day workshop: Is Co-housing for You? on May 5th and 6th  in Sidney. Register at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/ravens-crossing-cohousing-9793822194.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions? info@ravenscrossing.ca

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? BC Transit has bus service to the Sidney Library, and plenty or parking on site. Wheelchair accessible

Sat May 5th 4:30-6.00pm, Sidney Library, 10091 Resthaven Drive, Sidney, BC Cost: FREE
