MAKING A STATEMENT – a workshop for writing artists’ statements

Whether you are just entering the art world, or whether you are an established artist moving into a new phase, or media, this workshop may be of interest to you:

Artists paint/sculpt/sew. They usually do not write particularly well. If they did, they would be writers. Still, artists often need to produce a statement about their work for a show, for their website, or when applying for a grant. This workshop explores how you can go beyond the obscurity of “artspeak” to present an open, honest statement of your current work, or the work you intend to do in the future.

TIME: The workshop is 2-3:30 pm. From 3:30-4:00 pm there will be a tour of Jin-me Yoon’s solo show at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, guided by Yvonne Vander Kooi (Art Education Coordinator)

PLACE: Art Lab, Nanaimo Art Gallery, 150 Commercial Street

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS: writing material and a small piece of your artwork

FACILITATOR:  Naomi Beth Wakan is a personal essayist, the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Nanaimo and the Inaugural Honorary Ambassador for the Federation of BC Writers.  She has written over fifty books including “On the Arts,” a series of essays on various aspects of creativity based on pieces written for the American Art magazine, Still Point Arts Quarterly.

FEE: $25 (members of the NAG) $27 (non-members)

TO REGISTER: artlab@nanaimogallery.ca
