Sexuality and Aging

Tawnya and Chris Wilkinson are passionate about fitness and about helping others live better lives. Initially working in the area of personal training and wellness coaching, they began dreaming of launching their own business and found elder care to be a perfect fit for them. They started their award-winning Nurse Next Door franchise in 2008, providing in-home care and support for seniors in Cowichan, Nanaimo, Parksville and surrounding communities. “Make a difference in the lives of others” and “admire people” are the core values that guide them in their business and personal lives.

I see so much in magazines and online about the linkages between aging and sexuality that I feel compelled to write about it. But it’s my first attempt, so forgive me if I’m not very good at it.

Remember when sexuality was thought to become extinct as we age? Well, that’s done. The Baby Boomer generation is once again changing the face of aging through another sexual revolution.

Check this out … a National Council on Aging survey reports that among people age 60 and over who have regular intercourse, 74 percent of the men and 70 percent of the women find their sex lives more satisfying than when they were in their 40s.

Boomers are attending retreats on sexuality and seeking out the advice and support of sex coaches and therapists. Those over 50 tend to be adventurous and sexually curious.

And it’s not just boomers – the seniors I’m meeting in retirement communities are not shy to talk about sex either. Sexuality just isn’t taboo anymore. Sexuality synergists like Viagra and Cialis, as well as aids like lube and toys have exploded in popularity!

Normal changes in our bodies that occur as we age may make us adjust how we participate … but that’s just rolling with it! Accepting normal biological changes and appreciating your partner is sexy.

Not that any of us need much convincing that a healthy sex life has its benefits, but in case anyone’s asking … here are a few common ones. Healthy sex:

  • Promotes happier mood
  • Increases our immune system
  • May relieve pain
  • Helps us sleep better
  • Can drastically reduce stress or anxiety
  • Boosts self-esteem
  • Strengthens relationships

Even more interesting … research supports the claim that healthy sex adds years to your life! … and might I add, life to your years. There’s no medication that can provide those benefits!!

One key thing … the most important piece to this is communication. Healthy sex requires some courage to have honest, open communication. In the spirit of giving, ask your partner what really turns them on.

Finally, be a student of the game. Both people benefit. It pays dividends. There is so much information at your fingertips … search online together and see what happens! Have fun. Be safe.
