Stroke and Reflexology

Posted | 2 comments

Nicole Costello is a Certified Reflexologist. She began her studies in 1993 and is trained in both Eastern and Western traditions. Centerline Reflexology was born out of her passion to free people from pain through this specific type of foot massage, which also increases circulation and reduces stress. Her enthusiasm resides in aiding others in maintaining their independence and an active lifestyle! You can find her traveling all over Victoria, from seniors' facilities to community spaces, as well as providing home visits. Lucky for Victoria residents, she has clinic hours available in James Bay and Cook Street Village as well.

What does success look like? When people come into my office at Centerline Reflexology, we have an initial discussion. We address goals and expectations. Sometimes people don’t realize that it may take a series of four or more sessions before they start to see and feel changes. Reflexology and foot massage always feel great, but results take time. In looking at studies worldwide, I can provide my clients with information on the typical duration of the healing process, but every body is different and results will vary.

Barbara and Kevin Kunz have had success treating stroke clients immediately following their stroke. Their client Nadine, was able to move her left leg (previously paralyzed) off the bed and bend it after only three treatments. These reflexologists have written many books and are well renowned.

My own case studies include a man, aged 92, whose stroke affected his right arm. It consistently felt numb. Following only two treatments, he reported greater sensation and dexterity. Unfortunately he moved, but I hope he found another reflexologist.

Janet came into my office having survived a hemorrhagic stroke approximately four years earlier, causing paralysis down her right side. She came in utilizing a cane and a pace (electrodes to stimulate muscle contraction) and I noticed that her steps were small and her gait compromised. She shared her story of transition from wheelchair to her present limitations and her challenges walking. Always an active person, she felt she had hit a plateau with her current therapies. Having taken a break for three months from these other therapies, she was ready to try something new; this turned out to be reflexology.

With not much feeling down her right side, Janet was thrilled to experience new sensations through her leg during treatments. After 60 minute sessions over 10 weeks, she gained not only new sensations, but new voluntary movement. This brief video shows the movement she has gained after eight weeks of regular sessions. Further testament to her experiences with reflexology over ten weeks of treatments will be up on our Youtube channel shortly.

Continue to follow this story and find out more about reflexology and what it can do for you on our Facebook page. We are constantly visiting new communities, adding new information and stories, as well as offering specials to our members. I hope you enjoyed this story and  will join us in encouraging others who have suffered a stroke to regain movement and sensation through the practice of reflexology.
