A Local Voice for Island Artists

Island Arts Magazine is a dynamic publication that has spent the past six years featuring artists, exhibitions, workshops and editorials with an Island focus. The story of the magazine When Susan Schaefer moved to Vancouver Island in 2007, she was looking for information on local artists and was surprised at the lack of a single outlet to source out artisans. The desire to create a singular forum for artists to share their work and interact with other like-minded people on the Island art scene was the catalyst for what would become a project of passion and purpose – the creation of...

Painting Panache

X Marks the Headboard Wall An earthquake does not have to be the “big one” to cause damage and there are some things we should – or should not be doing to minimize that potential damage. One thing we should NOT be doing is hanging anything breakable above our beds. In an earthquake, it is very common for pictures to “jump” off their hooks and crash onto the floor. If the picture is above your bed, it will most likely come crashing down onto your forehead (OW) and then fall flat onto your face and break (BIGGER OW). A great alternative to hanging art or wallpapering is to paint...

Retail businesses know that a well-designed storefront draws more people into their business and more money is spent as a result. Whether electric, gas or wood, Douglas-fir evokes the spirit of the real (or not so real) flame. It can be jointed with a loose (Rustic, Country) grain or a...

Celebrating Women 2013

Every year in Campbell River, The Vancouver Island North Women’s Resource Centre hosts an inclusive art show that features art from both amateur and professional artists alike. The array of paintings that form the nucleus of the show is always a visual feast. For this year’s show, I have decided to showcase three completely different example of art about women, by women. The show will run until March 12th at the Tidemark Theatre Gallery at 1220 Shoppers’ Row, downtown Campbell River. The opening was held on Sunday, Feb 24th and it was complete with the Shimmy Sisters belly dancers,...

Interior Design … Island Style

As an artist as well as an interior designer, it has always been a focus of mine to create spaces where every piece can stand on its own, while at the same time work as a cohesive ensemble. Each piece, whether functional or decorative, should serve a purpose so that the final composition is a joy to be in, without hindering the true functionality of the space. This is not always easy to achieve so when I come across the “perfect” pieces for a client I get really excited. I always try to find items for my client’s homes in the area where they live; this way I support the local...
