Through the course of my blogging for Island Woman, LocaLHomeSpot.com and Trendir, I come across an amazing array of interior, architectural and furniture designs, and with the incredible summer we’ve been having, I thought I would share with you the top five outdoor designs I have come across over the past year.
Kartell Masters Chair
First up is a chair that can be used indoors as well as outside due to its polypropylene construction, and weighing in at only 11 pounds, it can be moved about with great ease. What makes this chair so special is the unique triple silhouettes incorporated into its backrest. Each of the three shapes represent a different master furniture maker’s chair. The three are as follows:
- Arne Jacobson’s Series 7 chair from 1955
- Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Chair from 1958
- Charles / Ray Eames’ Eiffel Chair from 1940
This chair is a great tribute to three (actually four when you consider Charles and Ray are two, not one) furniture maker icons, and even though all three of the silhouettes are from the 40s and 50s, the Kartell Masters Chair is definitely a contemporary statement of beauty and functionality.
Kara BBQ
Part sculpture, part function … the Kara BBQ is a modern steel double-ring sculpture with a 20”x 20” adjustable height grilling surface made from stainless steel. This is a charcoal grill, so for you purists, that means that not only is it the ultimate BBQ but it also produces the ultimate BBQ food. As many of you may know by now, the kitchen and BBQ stations are my husband’s domain, but I would jump at a chance to have one of these babies in my back yard. The Kara BBQ through Cesarre has to be the most beautiful cooking station I have ever seen – and I’ve seen a lot!
Garden Arc Butterfly Gazebo
Sometimes too much sun is simply too much, but that doesn’t mean we want to head indoors. Nope, that’s when gazebos come a-calling and what better type of gazebo to have in your yard than a stunner like this one. What’s extra special about it is its West Coast aesthetic, even though it draws its inspiration from European aesthetics. This is no accident; the gazebo is meant to be a combination of European and North American organic architecture, and even better, it’s made from sustainable white pine wood. At 13’x13’ the Butterfly Gazebo by Garden Arc is approximately 170 sq ft of usable floor space and can accommodate a 10 place dining table.
Urban Housing for Urban Chickens
So far, we have a great place to sit while we watch the BBQ preparing awesome food and if it’s too sunny, we have a beautiful gazebo for shade. Now all we need are organic free-range eggs to add to our plate of scrumptious backyard delicacies. Here in Campbell River, backyard chickens have made it into the zoning bylaws, so fresh eggs are easy pickings. Eggs and chickens mean chicken coops, and with a backyard filled with beautiful designer décor, chickens need a place that is just as high stylin’. Luckily, Mitchell Snyder Architecture recently featured its own DIY urban chicken coop on Dwell Magazine, and what makes this chicken pad even more amazing is its green roof and recycled siding. Love it!
Landscape Spheres
Once your backyard functionality is all taken care of, it’s time to layer in a few gorgeous accessories. That’s where these stunning spheres come in. Made from bent steel that has been left to weather in the environment, they come in 18”, 24” and 30” diameters. If you don’t like the rusty look (which I do), you can also get them in copper, brass or powder-coated in a colour. The Landscape Orbs arrive flat pack so shipping is easy. Buy one or a cluster; either way they will be an awesome addition to your yard – they kind of remind me of tumbleweeds and I like that visual story – reminds me of a road trip I once took but that’s another story for another day.
