The Art of Looking Put Together. Casual-cool is a style that’s been popping up all over the place, from Instagram to the runways of New York Fashion Week. It’s definitely one of my personal favourites, since I’m a lover of all things comfortable. The only problem with the style is it can go from cute to sloppy very quickly, so here are some tips on how to avoid that, and look carefree instead of careless.
There are a few simple tricks that can really make all the difference when dressing casually. The t-shirt is a staple which is easy and fun to play up. One of my go-to tricks is the half tuck. Grab a bottom corner of your shirt, slightly twist, and tuck into the waistband of your pants. That’s all there is to it! I find this small change works wonders to accentuate your shape, which would otherwise be swallowed up by the boxy silhouette of a loose-fitting tee. A second tee-trick is to roll your sleeves a couple of times for the vintage look.
Another key player in the casual style game is a well fitted pair of pants. Especially when you’re wearing an oversized top, a properly fitting pair of pants is important to maintain the balance of stylish verses sloppy. Pair a relaxed tee with tailored slacks for the grown-up look, or go with the classic combo of jeans and a t-shirt for a youthful appeal. Regardless of the style of pant you go for, make sure it’s well fitted; You’ll look more put together, and it will also highlight your shape, rather than hanging off your body in an unflattering way. Belts can only do so much if the pants aren’t closely enough in the first place.
Essential to the overall look is the right pair of shoes; They completely change the feel of an outfit. For example, let’s say that you’re wearing a slightly fitted tee and boyfriend jeans. A pair of sneakers will immediately lend a more laid back air to the look, which is great if you’re just out-and-about on your day off. When you want to transition you to a night out, switch to a pair of ankle boots with a slight heel.
To further glam up your outfit, while keeping with the casual style you’re aiming for, add a statement necklace, and tie your hair into a loose ponytail at the nape-of-the-neck, leaving a few strands loosely falling out.
Thanks to the casual chic trend, women have never been more comfortable while stylish. Don’t get too caught up in trying to avoid making “rookie mistakes”. We all make them. The suggestions in this article are just that; suggestions. Just relax, and don’t overthink it. After all, the whole point of this style is a laid-back attitude!
