February is a month often associated with the heart, for so many reasons. Two of the most prominent that come to mind are Valentine’s Day and the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s national monthly drive to raise funds for research.
Leading up to Valentines Day, we are reminded of celebrating new love or of being in a partnership, and we focus on the value of sharing our lives with others. We are called upon to open our hearts to one another in kind and generous ways. The heart is more than the source of our loving feelings though.
What happens when our heart isn’t functioning well? “Today, heart disease and stroke take one life every 7 minutes and 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor.” (Heart and Stroke Foundation, 2015). This hits home to many of us and is more than just a statistic to those (myself included) who have been affected personally in one way or another. Our loved ones are cherished and certainly dear to our hearts. It is not hard to see how this organ (the pump that keeps us alive) is associated with so much emotion.
If a month could have a focus, February’s is on both sharing and caring for our hearts. This had me thinking about how I could share what I know of reflexology to help others care for themselves and others better. So here is a link to a short video on some tips for the heart reflex.
Reflexology can increase circulation, ease pain sensations and greatly reduce stress. By engaging the parasympathetic nervous system through gentle pressure point stimulation, the body can shift into a restorative state. Replenishing our mind-body link is key to a longer and healthier life. I encourage readers to comment below on activities you have incorporated into your lives to reduce stress daily. We know that chronic stress, if left unchecked, can lead to high blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia), hardening of the arteries, heart disease and heart attack. Let’s make a new statistic on how caring for ourselves and each other can bring more joy, health and confident well-being into reality.
One more interesting heart fact is that the heart outputs a large electromagnetic field from the body, averaging a distance of five feet from the source. If you ever had any doubt that hearts reach out to each other … well, they certainly do! For more information on the electromagnetic field of the heart, click here.
If you would like to explore what reflexology can do for you or for a loved one I’ve put together a reflexology gift certificate to celebrate the heart’s continued well-being. I hope you all have a heart fulfilling February!
