Mother and Healer

Megan Edge is a Master Healer and wild foods & foraging expert who works with clients ready, willing, and able to envision deep and permanent healing through natural medicine and wellness practices featuring food as medicine, healing with nature, foraging wild plants, wildcrafting, and essential oils. She teaches people to reconnect and feel comfortable and confident in the natural world with guided nature walks, wildcrafting workshops, and plant and species identification. Megan loves sharing what she knows about urban and wild food foraging with her new business, Beyond the Garden Gate Botanicals. (http://www.beyondthegardengate.ca/)

We build bridges every day, between opposing sides of the same thing.  One of my goals as a Healer, is to build bridges between alternative and conventional medicine, so people can benefit from both.

These days I’m building a different bridge, one between being a Healer and being a Mother. I believe that as a Mother, I’m inherently a Healer. Every Mother is. The cough syrup company, Robitussin, capitalized on this with their Dr. Mom commercials in the 1990’s. Dr. Mom knows best, right?

My experiences recently with conventional medicine would say otherwise. My oldest daughter is in a health crisis, which is agonizing to watch when all the healing tools and techniques I employ cannot get to the source of her illness. It’s enough that I feel powerless at times in my ability to heal her pain and confusion. Conventional medicine would have me believe that everything I know about healing is ineffective; that the human body is primarily a physical machine, more like a car then a work of art.

There are many wonderful doctors in the world, making a beautiful difference in the lives of the patients they work with. There is also, still, a prevailing attitude that as soon as we, the patient, steps across the threshold of the doctor’s office, we no longer know ourselves. And, we, the patient, often become tongue-tied in front of the white coat, and forget how well we do know ourselves. We are then given a magic pill, as though all the healing in the world can fit into a bottle.

My daughter has had to stand up to her doctors when they’ve told her she’s depressed and suffering from an anxiety disorder. She’s had to stand up to them when she’s been told her condition is psychological and not physical in origin. She’s been present when the Emergency doctor proclaimed all Naturopathic doctors and Energy Healers a bunch of quacks.

My daughter has lost faith in the conventional medical system, and she’s only 16. So, what is my job as a Healer and a Mother? I know many ways to work with energy in a healing capacity and I’m an excellent intuitive counsellor. This has been my work for most of my life.

More than that, however, I’m her Mother. My choice in all of this is to always be her Mother first and foremost. To advocate for her as we traverse the medical system, to hold her when she needs my love and support, to be her solid foundation when the doctors tell her it’s all in her head.

The prayers and loving energy for her recovery are always welcome, from all corners. Knowing others are holding the space for that allows me to step fully into Mother, and that’s the most important healing I can do for her as I stand in the center of the bridge I’ve built as Mother and Healer.
