Reflexology for Sleep

Posted | 0 comments

Nicole Costello is a Certified Reflexologist. She began her studies in 1993 and is trained in both Eastern and Western traditions. Centerline Reflexology was born out of her passion to free people from pain through this specific type of foot massage, which also increases circulation and reduces stress. Her enthusiasm resides in aiding others in maintaining their independence and an active lifestyle! You can find her traveling all over Victoria, from seniors' facilities to community spaces, as well as providing home visits. Lucky for Victoria residents, she has clinic hours available in James Bay and Cook Street Village as well.

After looking at my website statistics, I noticed many of you are visiting my site in the middle of the night! My website CenterlineReflexology.com was getting viewed at 3am by many of you. It didn’t take me long to realize, you night owls were obviously not sleeping and perhaps not by choice. So this article is for you insomniacs and restless sleepers out there.

I put together some pressure points you can do on yourself to help you get back to the land of Zzzzz’s…
Let’s start with reflexology points on the foot:

Sleep Routine

1) Say hello and goodnight to the nervous system – solar plexus press and rotate using your thumb x3 (time the in-breath with pressure and the out-breath with releasing pressure on this point).

2) Shut down the brain! Massage the big toe followed by the other toes, concentrating at the tips for the brain reflexes.

3) Use your thumb to press the pituitary, hypothalamus + pineal gland reflexes x3 each.

4) Rotate each toe clockwise and counterclockwise – This helps release the neck + shoulder ridge.
Use your thumb to “walk” the neck and shoulder ridge area – This is often an area of tension which inhibits sleep.

5) Thumb press the Insomnia point located at the top of the heel pad x3.

6) repeat steps starting with #5, going backwards to #1, so you are ending the routine with the Solar Plexus.

What do these glands do?

Pineal = secretes melatonin, a hormone that affects our wake/sleep modulation patterns.

Pituitary gland + Hypothalamus= “… both control the involuntary nervous system, which manages the balance of energy, heat and water in the body. Body temperature, heart beat or the amount of urine are all regulated this way, for example, and so are sleep, hunger and thirst.” ~U.S. National Library of Medicine

I truly hope this routine helps you get the rest you need! Repeat this routine every other day, as it takes awhile to bring balance back to the body. You may not feel the effects until the 4th or 5th session. It is best to do this routine an hour before bed.

Here’s a video outlining techniques for this sleep routine.
