Reflexology For Winter

Posted | 0 comments

Nicole Costello is a Certified Reflexologist. She began her studies in 1993 and is trained in both Eastern and Western traditions. Centerline Reflexology was born out of her passion to free people from pain through this specific type of foot massage, which also increases circulation and reduces stress. Her enthusiasm resides in aiding others in maintaining their independence and an active lifestyle! You can find her traveling all over Victoria, from seniors' facilities to community spaces, as well as providing home visits. Lucky for Victoria residents, she has clinic hours available in James Bay and Cook Street Village as well.

Officially the days have become longer, but we are still in the winter months which means that certain parts of our bodies are taxed in different ways. Our habits change as we slow down in winter in order to build ourselves up with new resources for spring. In Chinese medicine, the winter season is ruled by water; this is considered the most Yin (feminine) season. The organs most affected during this time are the kidney and bladder. The Chinese believe that vital life energy – Ch’i – circulates in the body along meridians. In mapping out reflexes along meridian lines and through comparative study with zone theory, I have devised the following short routine to help support the body:

Areas commonly affected in a kidney and bladder meridian imbalances include:

  • Hair loss
  • Headache
  • Sinus
  • Eye weakness (itchy/red/squinting)
  • Neck tension headaches
  • Spine -pain and stiffness
  • Sore/weak lower back
  • Pain in kidneys and bladder
  • Sciatica
  • Hamstring pain
  • Broken capillaries
  • Calf pain/tightness/cramps
  • Weak ankles/feet
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Bent little toe

Muscles commonly affected in a kidney and bladder meridian imbalances are:

  • Sacrospinalis – group of muscles along the spine
  • Upper trapezius – this muscle tilts the head back and pulls shoulder blade up.
  • Psoas – this muscle joins the upper and lower body and contributed to bending at the hip joint.
  • Tibials – this muscle flexes the foot in and upwards
  • Petroneus – lower leg muscle which flexes the side of the foot upwards and out

The kidneys are paired organs and the reflex points are found on both feet as well as on both hands. Whether you are doing a self-treatment or one for someone else, make sure to do both sides! If you are having trouble with the urinary system, you can add the kidney, ureters and bladder to the beginning as well as at the end of the treatment routine outlined in the video above.
