The complimentary practice of reflexology has been around for thousands of years. The populace of Denmark, China and the United Kingdom have made reflexology an integral part of their health care. Stats Canada states that more people are now seeking complimentary services (like reflexology) than ever before. Still, many people may be wondering “what is it all about?” Here are some commonly asked questions and answers on the topic of reflexology.
Reflexology is a very specific type of gentle foot massage that works with the nervous system and connective tissues. Through stimulating specific areas on the foot, messages are sent throughout the entire body. These reflex points that correspond to other parts of the human body are stimulated in a very specific order. For example, there are reflexes located on the foot for the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and so on. The order of applying pressure is done to both follow and optimize natural body functions.
What does a reflexology session look like?
Most reflexology sessions last anywhere between 30 to 90 minutes. While most reflexologists only work on the feet, you can expect some (like myself) to include the calves and work from the knee down. Others work only on the ears or on the hands. Sometimes lotion or hand gripped tools are used, though most reflexologists utilize their thumbs or knuckles to apply pressure. Soothing massage techniques are also used for relaxation throughout the treatment. Please note that you should always communicate with your reflexologist during the treatment, especially if there are areas of tenderness.
How can it help me?
Studies show that a series of reflexology sessions can assist in increasing circulation, lowering blood pressure, reducing pain and anxiety, assisting digestion issues and headaches, and providing relief from back, hip and joint pain, to name only a few of its benefits. Reflexology relieves the whole body by eliminating stress, the main culprit behind so many ailments and diseases. The ultimate purpose of reflexology therapy is to promote wellness.
How often should I get a treatment?
Treatments should be sought whenever you feel stressed. Most people who are in good health find bi-weekly or monthly treatments provide them with the relief they need. As a reflexologist who has been practicing for 20 years, I like speaking with each client to discuss any areas of particular concern they might have. I then look at all available studies to find the frequency and duration of treatments that have provided the best results. I advise each client about the information I have gathered. For example, according to studies, people with high-blood pressure report that they do better with 30 minute sessions twice a week to keep their stress levels at bay.
I hope this overview has answered some of the questions you may have about reflexology. I also hope that it has encouraged you try this complimentary therapy that has its roots deep in history and its focus on self-care! If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me as this is one of my favorite subjects to discuss!

Reiki is an early kind of power recovery in which an individual serves as a channel for Universal Life Pressure. The Reiki individual opens up himself/herself as a channel for a power that comes from a greater source to help healing or remedy an individual’s aura. This is thought to be beneficial for the spirit, body, and thoughts or the Indian system called chakra.
