Island Woman would like to hear from you. This page is designed for guest contributors ... women who have something to say about Island living. Suppose you'd like to speak your mind about a current issue in the news, or perhaps you've just read a great book you'd like others to know about. Just leave a comment in the Reply box below and we'll be in touch. We look forward to our guest column becoming a lively and vibrant commentary on the views of Island Woman.

I am running as a Candidate in the upcoming fall elections, as Area Director in the CVRD. Area G encompasses many Gulf Islands, including Penelakut and Thetis, Valdes and Ruxton as well as the residential neighbourhood of Sunny Saltair and a vast swath of territory reaching into the center of Vancouver Island, almost to Youbou!

With a population of approximately 2000 people, Area G has several distinct communities, and yet we all share common concerns.

Thetis continues to enjoy its historic Forbes community center with plans to expand, while Saltair embarks on planning for the recently purchased former Mount Brenton Elementary school, now the area’s Community Center, run by a volunteer board with an ever expanding membership base, and regular paying tenants. As TICA states in its printed materials “even when you do not use the services provided (their existence makes your community) a better place to live or visit and enhances property values”.

The Thetis Island Quarterly is an impressive local publication highlighting local people and activities.

I look forward to my first visit to the Nature House on July 25th, revisiting the lands on which I spent many, many summers and at winter work parties at the former Camp Columbia. I was pleased to visit with some locals in early June, revisiting the Thetis Island Marina and Pub, and continue to celebrate all of the communities here on the Salish Sea.

Please visit my website  https://lia-versaevel.ca/  and my Facebook page, my Twitter account @IslandSalish Sea and give me a call, just for a chat or to engage on some issues of concern and interest.  778-927-4991  My email account  cvrdareag2018@gmail.com  is already humming with activity, and I look forward to engaging with all the voters, to earn YOUR vote on October 20.

Please check my website frequently for public meetings (next in Saltair on July 19 at the Community Center at 7 p.m.) and social gatherings. Invite me over, or I’ll be pleased to meet with you where you choose in the next short 15 weeks!

I look forward to the opportunity to serve you, and take your voice to the CVRD.

As your Saltair Director I believe my service to you involves:

– I will have dedicated weekly open door one on one office hours opportunities in Saltair and on Thetis and hopefully Penelakut, when I am invited

– Regular community conversations/ meetings providing input opportunities/information regarding my work on your behalf at the CVRD and through my social media accounts

– I take this responsibility seriously, and will be accountable and transparent to the voters of Area G

– I will advocate that  fiscally responsible decisions be made on behalf of Area G taxpayers

Thank you! Huy ch q’u!
