A Big Hello to You All, this is my first article for ‘Island Woman’, thank you Trish for the invite!

In light of the beautiful sunny days ahead, I thought I would offer you some

 SUMMER BEAUTY TIPS.

I’m sure by now you all know how important sunscreen is, but on a lighter side . . . . .

I would like to offer some tips on how to look your best on a hot sunny day.

Sun can really strip colored treated hair, protect your investment with a pretty hat.  A hat will do double duty, protecting your hair color as well as your beautiful face.

Sun hats are “oh so pretty” and feminine.

Sunlight makes everything look more pronounced.  Pores are more noticeable, fine lines become more high def and colors become ultra vivid.

You may wish to key down your makeup and avoid anything too light reflective (sparkly).

If you do want some coverage, now is a great time to try a BB Cream, which offers many benefits in one step.  Look for a tinted BB Cream with an SPF, moisture, light foundation and protection in one product.

An option to makeup would be a self tanner (yes, on face too).  It will offer a safe sun kissed glow, and often you can skip foundation all together.

With face makeup, less is more on a warm, bright day.

Perhaps a bright pop of waterproof eye liner for color, and a bright lipstick, but only smudged into your lips for a stain.  Stay away from color with bluish undertones, neutral or warm tones will flatter you best under a bright natural light.

A powder compact in your bag will help control the glow.

Self-tanners will make your legs look great and slimmer!

Remember to remove all your makeup and sunscreen at days end to let your skin breath, then slather on a night cream containing hyaluronic acid to rehydrate your skin.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  1. Hi Rhonda ,welcome to the team. You may laugh at this ,but what is BB cream. Thanks Trish.

    • Hi Trish,
A BB cream is a multi-purpose product which offers a moisturizer, a light foundation coverage and often a sunscreen as well. It’s a one stop shop for the busy girl who doesn’t like to fuss. Marcelle Brand is excellent and reasonably priced.

  2. Great article to share with my wife. I’m curious about self-tanners. I’m a 50-year-old man and I like to have tanned (or tanned looking) skin to offset my bright hair. I’m a little more concerned about skin carcinoma and I’m wondering if there is a good product for men?

    • Hi Mathieu,
Self tanners rock!! You will love them. There are many high-end pricey brands out there but you do not need to spend a lot of money. The active ingredient (dihydroxyacetone) is pretty much the same in them all. They have been proven very safe.

They cause a chemical reaction to your skin upon application and develop over several hours. I really like the Jergens Natural Glow as they are more gradual and easier to control. They last approx 5 days then gradually slough off with your skin cells. Application is key!! blending carefully and washing hands well after application. Fear not my friend, give one a go!

As for sun protection, you may already have a favorite but for men I often recommend the LaRoche-Posay Ultra-fluid lotion, spf 60. I have found that men prefer a very light texture. This product offers full UVA(aging) and UVB(burn) protection and is recognized by the Canadian Dermatology Association.
If you are in my area, Chemainus, feel free to pop in and I will be happy to help you find these products.
      Cheers!
      Rhonda.

      • Thank you Rhonda. That’s great information! Didn’t expect to see you respond so quickly.

I’m up in Chemainus mid-month and I’ll see you and make the purchase.

      • Thank you Rhonda. Great information. I didn’t expect such a quick response.

I’m up island mid-month and I’ll pop in.
