Career change: You’ve reached that two to three year hump where your job has become stagnant and you’re starting to think about a career change. But where do you start? Instead of aimlessly sending out cover letters and resumes to companies that are currently hiring, why not make a plan for your future?

By identifying the key elements of a work setting that keep you engaged and satisfied, you will help to narrow your job search and focus in on positions that you actually want. Similarly, by outlining your minimum occupational requirements, you will also help stay away from positions that are not worth your time. Whether you’re searching for a six-figure salary or a workplace that offers flexible hours, remember to stay focused on potential positions that align with your personal values.

In order to understand what types of jobs align with your personal values, there are twelve main job components to consider. I recommend creating a chart that lists each of the following job components (in order of importance to you) with your personal specifications for each component. Create an additional three columns titled “ideal”, “make”, and “break”. Determine what your ideal expectations are, what would ‘make’ you take the job and what would ‘break’ or go against your personal values.

Once you are finished, use this personal values guide as a way to curate which jobs are worthy of your application!
