What is your favourite month?

I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother; and spent my whole working life as a nurse. I was a "ban the bomber" in London in the sixties and a part of the back to earth movement of the seventies here on Vancouver Island. These experiences have made me who I am. I am me. I am an Island Woman. In retirement I now enjoy even more being an Island Woman.

I love September.

I have always loved September, it brings me feeling of contentment, peace and satisfaction.

As a farmer, and a farmer’s daughter, these feeling were very real, emotionally and physically. It was harvest time. The fruits of our labour were finally there for everyone to see.

All the sweat and anxiety over the crops wellbeing, the weather, the pests and many other unknown and uncontrollable happenings that are the constant companions of farm life was over.

For better or for worse the crops were finally harvested.

There was such a sense of relief and of satisfaction. The smiles and hugs said it all.

I still get that warm feeling come September. The seasons are slowing down. The weather tends to be more gentle. The colours are inspiring and soothing.

We also get to enjoy eating the last of the blackberries warmed by the sun straight from the bush.

This in turn reminds of a story of the love of a man for his woman, and his quirky sense of humour.

Laurie is no longer with us, but he was a master storyteller. When I think of blackberries I remember Laurie with affection. Please click on the following link and you will understand why: – https://islandwoman.ca/farm-dancing

I love September.
